National Baklawa Day

November 17th marks the annual celebration of National Baklawa Day: the sweetest day of the year!

What is baklawa?

Baklawa (or “baklava”) is a pastry dessert that’s perfect for anyone with a sweet tooth. This delicate treat is made up of numerous thin, flaky filo pastry sheets that are meticulously layered on top of each other, creating a mouth-watering crunch when you bite into the sweet. Traditionally, within the filo layers you will find crushed nuts (such as pistachio or walnuts) that give the dessert a hearty, flavoursome kick. The filo layers are then delectably soaked in melted clarified butter before being baked in the oven. Finally, the freshly baked treat is immersed in a sweet, sticky, divine sugar syrup that brings the whole dessert together. If this intricate process intrigues you, check out our behind the scenes short film about the history of Dina Foods and baklawa.

With that being said, no one really knows exactly when the first baklawa pastry was created, but some sources believe it could have originated from the Assyrian Empire. Centuries of perfecting the recipe and finding the perfect combination of nuts and syrups, baklawa has grown to be one of the most popular desserts in the Middle East region, as well as other countries such as Greece, Turkey, Northern Africa, Iran, etc.  Whether you call it baklava or baklawa, the one thing which the historical sources are all in consensus on, is the combination of fundamental ingredients that are used to create a tantalising and Moorish sweet.

As the leading baklawa producer in the UK, Dina Foods works with authentic recipes that have been handed down through the generations.  We are especially proud of our range of baklawa because we have worked hard to add a few creative twists to the traditional recipes. The tasty range, exclusive to Dina Foods, includes our special chocolate covered baklawa. Just when you thought baklawa couldn’t get any better, we’ve added a deliciously silky chocolate layer over the crunchy treat.

Another creative twist we pioneered is the addition of refreshing cranberries and apricots within the flaky filo pastry layers, as well as a lighter Filo-Delights® range. This baklawa range is perfect for the festive season of December or any other month of the year where you indulge yourself with delicious treats.

With that being said, what makes the Dina Foods baklawa so unique is the provenance of the ingredients that are used.  Whether it is the UTZ/Rainforest Alliance chocolate, the especially selected nuts, or the finely made filo in our BRC AA+ accredited state-of-art facilities in West London, the finished product is guaranteed to leave you with the sweetest taste.
